President Lyndon Johnson narrowly wins the New Hampshire Democratic presidential primary.

March 12, 1968

Johnson. with 49.5% of the vote, narrowly defeats Sen. Eugene McCarthy (D-Minn.), with 42.4%. Johnson’s narrow margin of victory reflects the increasing unpopularity of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. The election results prompt U.S. Sen. Robert Kennedy (D-NY) to enter the presidential race four days later on March 16, 1968 and Johnson to make a surprising announcement two weeks later.*
